Fruit Kebabs: Perfect Childrens' Party Treat

Firm-fleshed sweet fruits on fruit kebabs make healthy childrens' party treats
Fruit kebabs, or really, just large chunks of firm-fleshed fruit skewered onto a bamboo stick, go down a treat at children's birthday parties.

Yes, I know - not your usual party fare, but if only healthier options are on offer, it is amazing how everyone scoffs it all down.

For example, who would not want to eat the following?

The process is as simple as it gets.

First of all, peel  firm-fleshed fruit such as:

Papayas or paw-paws)
Pineapple
Spanspek or cantaloupe
Strawberries
Sweet melon or muskmelon
Watermelon

Next, chop them into large chunks of fruit:

Skewer them onto kebabs. We find a group of three fruit works well for little hands; we don't always find short kebab sticks, so sometimes just break the ordinary bamboo kebabs in half.

Colour combinations are, of course, key, and it is delightful to mix up greens, in the form of sweet melon or muskmelon, with its green flesh, as well as strawberries (which, if they are large, I tend to cut in half). However, the great thing about using three different fruits on one stick is that even those fruit which tend to be left on a plate when dishing up large chunks of fruit, are eaten when on one kebab.

If you have left-overs, may we suggest a fruit salad, drizzled over with a warm honey-and-ginger sauce, or making a fruit sorbet with the left-overs?
